…there he is again… His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Troublemaker!!!
…last week I was having dinner with a friend… He invited some other friends along who I had not met… This was the night of the State of the Union address, so I brought it up in conversation… Which wound around to the war(s) on terror… One his friends started explaining how much we’ve really helped the Afghan people, but not before explaining that they “were raised conservative, so…” I guess in a way it was kind of refreshing to hear someone basically say “well, i’ve been indoctrinated, so i don’t know if i REALLY think this…”
ANYWAY
….I asked this person what they really thought was best for the Afghan people…. No response… So, to any of you out there who make apologies and excuses for slaughter and “collateral damage”, excuses that sound like “well they’re better off now”, I ask you…
WHEN, EXACTLY, DO YOU THINK WE OUGHTTA SEND IN SOME TROOPS TO HELP THE PEOPLE OF TIBET??!?!!?
Click on the link, read the article, and you will see… A MONK, who was driven out of his own country, whose people were completely degraded, THAT’S the guy who threatens the world’s most populous country, and arguably the most powerful… WHY, EXACTLY, DID WE NOT LIBERATE THEM!?!??!?!?
We give China cheap labor and jobs, they give us debt and THIS miracle of statesmanship…

I agree with you on much of what you said here, until you get to the end.
We don’t give China anything. They give us–cheap labor for our greedy corporations to make larger profit margins; cheap products because we don’t make enough money anymore to buy anything better since all of our jobs have been shipped to countries that provide cheap labor; loans and loan guarantees for our enormous debt. I am sure that there are more things that I could list.
There is a reason that we let the students die in Tiananmen Square and that we do nothing to sanction China for its numerous civil rights violations and that the Olympic Commission awarded them the Olympics and that we don’t push them on environmental issues or punish them for exporting toxic products–it’s because they own us now. They are really the world’s superpower now. We are no longer at the top.
Thank Dick Nixon and the throng of greedy s.o.b’s that decided it would be great to “exploit” all that cheap labor. Anything that we have lost as a nation was merely the cost that we paid in order for the corporate masters to increase the share prices of their stock.

…..that is true Paula, it is always the shadowy not-quite-nations and pseudo-people known as corporations that have benefitted from the “relationship”, the “detente” you alluded to……. and you’re right, I should’ve drawn a better distinction between “we” and the multi-nationals, who certainly do not represent you and me……..
…..along those lines however, China doesn’t give US anything either….
Semantics and hair-splittings aside, I do feel it’s safe to say that they have benefitted more than we have from the dynamic….

Agreed. Funny thing is, the commies destroyed us with our own economic weapon, didn’t they? Ahh, irony…

It’s amazing to me how little press the crisis in Tibet receives. Every so often I see a “Save Tibet” bumpersticker and I wonder sometimes if given the Dalai Lama’s tireless devotion to world peace if it may not be Tibet that saves everyone else. Thanks for doing your part to publicize this injustice.
