……so I’ve been sittin on this Weezer Snuggie in the Prize Kitchen for weeks…. Figured it’d make a nice giveaway around the holidays… And then it struck me that perhaps I also oughtta construct some kinda charity around it… And I didn’t even think twice as to what charity/cause I’d want to raise money for……………I really didn’t think it’d be such an obscure thing….

So I wanted to see if anyone was thinking the same way I was…. I got some expected suggestions, charities to adress the needs for food, clothing, shelter…. And then I got the expected tongue-in-cheek stuff like prostitutes and marijuana… As the afternoon wore on you started suggesting things you’d probably associated with causes/things I’ve expressed conern for… Music…. Animals…..

…but the need that I see as critical this time of year is perhaps overlooked because many would rather not express it as a need…. It’s been conveniently boiled down to “holiday blues”…. Soundbyte or not, this is a potentially lethal time for people… For people who’ve suffered from depression or other mental illnesses, this can be a literally overwhelming month…. Many keep their mouths shut about it, because they don’t want to rain on everyone else’s presumed parade……

………………….anyway I was thinking that if I had a bunch of money to donate I might give it to a county Mental Health service… County budgets are being slashed and slashed again…. You’ve probably heard about the way that music programs are being deleted from high school curricula (that’s another blog)… At some point, they’ll get around to slashing mental health services too……….

  1. i caught the end of your show when you were speaking (exhausted?) to a woman about drinking and braincells and such. i found you refreshing. you are what a friend and i call a 1 percent-er. thank you. i was just talking to an office of social workers about being a single mom, and getting layed off (sept. 29th), and not believing that there is no social services for mental health after lay off…especially in this economy. if there was, why don’t more people know about it? oh, yeah, cause someone would have to be paid to tell people where to go. then someone would have to be paid to provide the services, cause everyone knows that people who are layed off don’t have money to pay for such services. aw, well just one more thing to deal with. also, i’m still waiting to see the magic health care reform. hopefully someone who can do something about it will do something about it. don’t be too blue!
    thankful for like minds…

  2. I take meds- several, actually. Which explains a lot about me, right? But it still never occurred to me. So now I can’t get it out of my head- that and the feeling that you are a much better person than I.
