Some have said I oughtta do a Resurrection Sunday blog… And maybe I oughtta… Back when I was a much less busy man I would frequently write about music on the Buzz site… At length… I’d pour my heart, mind, and soul into it… And it led directly to the formation of my own band… But anyway……. Maybe I can at least write a little something for each Sunday’s show… Either way…………
Regular Res. Sun. listeners: Starting Wednesday we’re continuing the tradition of Thanksgiving Leftovers Weekend on The Buzz… Lotsa 90s, one-hit-wonders, and Vintage too… So I figured I should up the ante a bit for next Sunday’s show… Tell me which bands you’d want to have an hour devoted to for next week… Leave a comment listing them 1-4, in order of who you’d most want to hear, or just send an email…. Looking forward to seeing who you pick!

Afentra's BigFat Morning Buzz
1. The Pixies
2. (The) Velvet Underground
3. Nirvana
4. The Buzzcocks

ok Jason, you know me pretty well, but just to follow the rules I will say
REM
U2
THE CURE
RAMONES
I don’t know if your listeners can handle A whole hour of the Ramones, but if they vote for it, I guess they will. LOL
Would Bowie count? I know he is one of your favs. You don’t play much Bowie do you?

1. The Replacements (you could play one song from each of their eight seminal releases from the ’80s and that’d probably fill up an hour.)
2. The Clash (granted, you played the entire, stellar London Calling album a couple weeks ago, but maybe this hour could focus more on their earlier, punkier stuff…)
3. The Pogues (don’t think I’ve ever heard them played on Res. Sunday–another hugely influential ’80s band, recently reunited and touring again.)
4. Echo & The Bunnymen (Please play an hour of them! They deserve it!)

Hello jason your my favorite dj on sunday morning. I’ve never sent you any mail or anything like that, I do appreciate your taste in the vintage music. For thanksgiving weekend the runners up should be (not any order) R.E.M., Flipper, The Police, and last but not least The Cure. Once again KEEP IT UP DUDE!

Ok, so we get to list what and why?
1. The Pixies: The Pixies are just the ultimate. Hands down. List a bad Pixies album (can’t be done.). Plus, the Pixies inspire and spawn nothing but greatness: Nirvana, The Breeders, etc.
Songs:
x]”(The) Sad Punk”
x]”Is She Weird?”
x]”U-Mass”
x]”Ed is Dead”
x]”Gouge Away”
x]”In Heaven” – so good!
2. The Velvet Underground. I feel like these guys are the essence of “vintage music.” I think of the Velvet Underground when I hear this quote by R.W.Emerson: “Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.” They really took their music and ran with it.
Songs:
x] “Stephanie Says”
x] “I’m Sticking With You”
x] “White Light/White Heat”
x] “I’ll Be Your Mirror”
x] “Beginning to see the Light”
x] “I Can’t Stand It”
x] “Sunday Morning”
3. Nirvana. You don’t want to realize that Nirvana classifies as vintage, but Bleach came out 20 years ago. Despite their brief time together, Nirvana has written some of the most significant songs to music history. They definitely deserve an hour.
Songs:
x] “Drain You”
x] “Aneurysm”
x] “I Hate Myself and Want to Die”
x] “Son of a Gun”
x] “About a Girl”
x] “Come As You Are”
x] “Negative Creep”!!
4. I have to retract the Buzzcocks and replace them with The Smiths.. Just because I’ve been listening to the Smiths a ton lately (sorry Buzzcocks.)
Songs:
x] “Asleep”
x] “Panic”
x] “Girlfriend in a Coma”
x] “Cemetry Gates”
x] “Frankly, Mr. Shankly”

1. Soundgarden – First of the majors coming out of that time and place. Had the most varied records than any of the others from that era. Cover all their records…Hands All Over, My Wave, Zero Chance, Boot Camp, Heretic, Swallow My Pride.
2. Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds – Influential but didn’t get the full credit they deserved.
3. David Bowie – Not played on the Buzz often but he covered all genres. He had so many great songs but all that is commonly heard are a handful of pop tunes. Go deep catalog for Mr. Bowie, please.
4. I gotta think some more about this…
NOT Nirvana! Nirvana is great but the Buzz plays the crap out of their music. They get an hour a day anyway. Give someone else a shot.

One final thought – I agree with Joel’s comment of “NOT Nirvana! Nirvana is great but the Buzz plays the crap out of their music. They get an hour a day anyway. Give someone else a shot.”
Please let it not be Nirvana. He is right…I hear probably 5-6 Nirvana songs EVERY DAY. Nirvana is great, but resurrection sunday should be artists that the buzz never/hardly plays that are being ‘resurrected’.

so many excellent bands to choose from but during the late 80’s and early 90’s my groups of friends widely felt that there were the big 4. These bands may not be the four I listen to most these day (of course they are not) but they still represent the best of that era and what it represented. SUre there are other bands that had a huge impact but for me these are the four most defining of the era. First a few who just missed out: pixies, sonic youth, beastie boys, the smiths, new order, RHCP & they might be giants.
My vote goes for:
1. The Cure
2. u2
3. rem
4. depeche mode

The Stooges, The Velvet Underground, David Bowie, Joy Division…Other Choices…The Smiths, The Cure, Pixies, Morrissey, Depeche Mode…Thanks Jason, I think this is a great idea.
Comment by Jesse — November 24, 2009 @ 9:24 am
The Cure and The Velvet Underground sound very nice. The 90’s o’ noon always plays a bunch of Nirvana, REM, U2… etc… and frankly there’s more to the 90’s than that Seattle/Ireland/whatchamacallit crap.

1. Afghan Whigs (or more recently Twilight Singers) – heard “what jail is like” on Resurrection Sunday. Incredible band, ridiculously underappreciated, hugely influential. Still hoping to see Greg in some incarnation live.
2. The Replacements/Paul Westerberg – Still has a pressing immediacy 25 years later. Love that no Sunday goes by without at least one track
Same comment as above, re: Paul
3. Social D – Seems like they are bigger now then in the ’80s/’90s. Bad Religion or the Descendents could be fun too. Loved their Halloweenie Roast show, just wish the cops wouldn’t have shut it down early(ish).
4. Tori Amos – Made piano-based music in the 90’s, did it well, and both sold albums & sold out shows. Influenced just about every female receiving airplay on the Buzz.
I also liked the Pogues, Echo & the Bunnymen, and Nick Cave suggestions. Lot of underplayed quality there too

Comment by Joel — November 24, 2009 @ 6:04 pm
Yes, please, please, please–NO Nirvana. The Buzz plays a lotta good stuff, but I hear so much of Nirvana that I’m starting to second-guess that I ever even liked them in the first place. Can anyone say OVER-rated…?
Anyway, here is my second list:
1. Bowie!! If he is eligible, I’d be thrilled to hear an hour of vintage Spiders From Mars/Aladdin Sane-era Bowie.
2. Social Distortion (love them)
3. XTC (so much more from this great band than \Making Plans for Nigel\ and \Dear God\
4. The Waterboys (hearing you play them last weekend got me listening to them again–great stuff!)
My 1st choice, however, remains The Replacements…
Comment by MCE — November 26, 2009 @ 2:58 pm
1. R.E.M.
2. Smiths/Morrissey
3. Pixies
4. U2
When I think of vintage buzz musicians who wrote meaningful & thought provoking lyrics woven into a musical tapestry with a great ebb & flow these immediately came to mind. The Pixies weren’t always necessarily as serious in their lyrics as my other choices tend to be but they had a huge influence on so many other artists making music today that I believe they deserve at least an hour of dedication. I look forward to hearing the results, if The Smiths make the top 4 would you consider playing \Half a Person\, I love that song!
